Kolkata by Steve McCurry
Let us set the scene: Almost four decades ago, a young reporter traveled to India for the very first time. Little did he know that this would be the beginning of an enduring love affair, which would result in over 30 visits. With each trip, the talented photographer would find a new face of this inimitable destination.
In order to capture the true essence of Indian authenticity, it was to Kolkata that Silversea sent Steve McCurry in April 2018. Whether in Bhopal or Bangalore, Jaipur or Jodpur, the charisma of the Indian people fascinates the photographer and shines through his lens. In this urban jungle, millions of people live, work and breathe. Aspects of the city may be humble in nature, but Kolkata has a noble heart that beats with love.
An orchestra of
“I like Kolkata a lot” he says, “there is a whole lot of culture, from art, photography, poetry, to the colonial architecture. The city has a lot of characters. It has a lot of activity on the streets. People live their lives in public.”
Capturing the Authentic Beauty of the World
Steve McCurry needs no introduction. He is most probably the greatest living photographer today. His iconic “Afghan Girl” image has captured the hearts and minds of thousands – the eloquence of her haunted expression, telling the world of her fate through her vivid green eyes – is simply stupendous.
So, when considering our new direction, Steve was a natural choice for us. He is a born storyteller with the soul of an explorer. His unique ability to capture what is left of the authentic beauty and truth in the world and express it with clarity and emotion is just brilliant. A McCurry image not only takes you on a journey, it inspires you to travel the world.
